What is Affective Forecasting

What is Affective Forecasting in Simple Terms?

Affective forecasting refers to the process of predicting one's emotional responses to a future event. How good or bad it will make us feel and for how long. We are surprisingly bad at this.

Affective Forecasting in Real Life

We tell ourselves that once we get that job, that car or that house we will finally be happy. But of course, that's not how it plays out. We adapt, the novelty fades and what once felt like everything quietly becomes just another part of the background.

We also tend to forget that almost everything else in our lives stays exactly the same. You bought the dream car but you're still driving the same roads to the same job. And maybe that's the thing that actually needs to change.

Affective Forecasting in Reverse

The same logic works the other way around. We convince ourselves that losing something like a job, a partner or a plan will shatter us. But it rarely does. We adapt. We rebuild. Life stubbornly goes on.

Conclusion

We consistently overestimate how happy a good outcome will make us and how devastated we'll be by a bad one.
