## What Is The Samaritan’s Dilemma in Simple Terms

The Samaritan’s Dilemma describes a potential problem that can arise when helping others.

Assistance can provide welcome short-term relief, but the expectation of continued support may reduce the recipient’s incentive to make efforts to improve their own situation.

### Samaritan’s Dilemma in Real Life

1. By repeatedly solving someone's problems for them, you may provide immediate relief while reducing their opportunities to develop independent problem-solving skills.

Over time, if the person comes to rely on your assistance rather than making their own efforts, they may become less self-reliant and increasingly dependent on your help.
2. Governments provide benefits to vulnerable groups to alleviate hardship and protect people from financial insecurity.

Depending on how government assistance is designed, the withdrawal of benefits as income increases may sometimes reduce the financial incentive to work or earn more. If support is not designed carefully, it may unintentionally create barriers to financial independence.

### The Not-So-Good Samaritan

Some helpers, whether individuals, organisations or governments, may deliberately offer quick fixes rather than helping people develop the skills and resources to solve problems independently.

In such cases, continued dependence can preserve the helper's influence over the recipient.

Both the party providing help and the party receiving it must be aware of the potential consequences, as assistance intended to solve an immediate problem may unintentionally create long-term dependency.

### Conclusion

Providing help can offer essential short-term relief, but it may also create unintended long-term consequences if it weakens the recipient's incentives to act independently.

Effective assistance should therefore consider not only the immediate problem but also how to help people develop the skills, resources and opportunities they need to improve their own circumstances.
