The mere exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon in which people tend to develop a preference for something simply because they are familiar with it, or have encountered it repeatedly. The Reversed Facial Images Study and the Mere Exposure Hypothesis: In a well-known study, people were shown two versions of their own face, a true photograph and its mirror image. Most preferred the mirror image, since that is the version they see daily in the mirror. Their friends, however, tended to prefer the true photograph, since that is the version they encounter when looking at the person directly. ### The Mere Exposure Effect in Real Life 1. Advertisers and businesses rely on repeated exposure to help consumers become familiar with a brand and develop more favorable attitudes toward it. You may have noticed a well-known company continuing to advertise long after most people already recognize its name and wondered why. One reason is that repeated exposure helps sustain familiarity and reinforce positive associations with the brand, even when new information is not being conveyed. 2. Governments have historically relied on repeated images, portraits and symbols of political leaders to reinforce public recognition. By continually exposing people to the same leader and associated messages, governments can increase familiarity, which under certain conditions may contribute to more favorable attitudes toward the leader or the government itself. ### Conclusion Repetition can shape people's attitudes by making something more familiar. Under the right conditions, simply encountering something repeatedly can lead people to view it more favorably, even without gaining any new information about it. Enjoyed this article? HiPPO stands for Highest Paid Person’s Opinion. It describes a situation in which a team or organization makes a decision mainly based on the views of its most senior, highest-ranking, or highest-paid member, rather than on data, evidence or independent analysis. The term was popularized in the mid-to-late 2000s by digital analytics experts, who used it to describe a common failure in business decision-making. ### The HiPPO Effect in Real Life Imagine a restaurant chain testing two versions of the same menu. After collecting enough data, the company finds that Version A clearly outperforms Version B, generating more orders and higher sales. When the results are presented to the CEO, however, he ignores the data and chooses Version B simply because he personally likes how it looks and feels. ### Why Does the HiPPO Effect Happen? The HiPPO effect isn't really about bad intentions, it's about group dynamics. 1. Hierarchy pressure. Junior employees may hesitate to contradict a senior leader, even when they have strong supporting data. 2. Anchoring. Once a senior person states an opinion first, it can become the reference point against which everyone else measures their own views. 3. Fear of career risk. Disagreeing with your boss can feel personally or professionally risky, regardless of what the evidence shows. ### What Is the Real Cost of the HiPPO Effect? 1. Decisions driven by authority rather than data can waste resources on strategies that the evidence would have flagged as weak or ineffective. 2. Missed opportunities follow when data-driven alternatives are set aside in favor of a senior leader's preference. 3. Trust in the team's data and analytical processes erodes over time, and in extreme cases, repeatedly ignoring evidence can contribute to broader organizational or financial failure. 4. The deeper cost is cultural. Once a team learns that data doesn't actually influence decisions, people stop investing effort in rigorous analysis. ### How to Counter the HiPPO Effect A few practical tactics can help keep decisions evidence-based: 1. Let junior team members and data owners speak first. Give them the chance to present their findings and opinions before senior leadership weighs in. 2. Use anonymous surveys or polls. Collect opinions before the meeting so they're less likely to be shaped by seniority or by who's in the room. 3. Agree on decision criteria in advance. Define what data or outcomes will determine the decision before anyone sees the actual results. 4. Assign a devil's advocate. Give someone explicit responsibility to challenge the dominant opinion and question the assumptions behind it. 5. Present the data first. Share the evidence on its own, before anyone starts giving opinions. ### Conclusion The HiPPO effect is a reminder that seniority is not the same as accuracy. Left unchecked, it quietly replaces evidence with hierarchy. The solution is not to remove leadership from decision-making, the solution is to ensure that data and evidence outweigh opinions and gut feelings. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. Poka-Yoke is an error-prevention approach that focuses on designing processes and systems in a way that makes errors impossible to make or, at least difficult to overlook. Poka-Yoke was formalized and adopted as part of the Toyota Production System in the 1960s. The term was originally called ''Baka-Yoke'', which can be translated as ''fool-proofing'' or ''idiot-proofing'' in Japanese. The name was later changed to ''Poka-Yoke'', meaning ''mistake-proofing'' because the original term was considered rude. ### Why Is Poka-Yoke Important? The value of Poka-Yoke lies in a simple shift. It moves the responsibility for preventing errors from the individual to the system or process. Individuals no longer have to constantly ''be careful'' or worry about making a mistake. Instead, the system is designed to prevent errors from occurring in the first place or to detect them before they can cause harm. This reflects an important truth. People will inevitably make mistakes. Good systems, therefore, should be designed to account for human error rather than rely on perfect attention or memory. ### Poke-Yoke in Real Life 1. Many nuclear power plants are equipped with seismic sensors that trigger an automatic shutdown when they detect a strong earthquake, without requiring a person to act. This can happen within seconds and adds an extra layer of safety during emergencies. 2. Medicines that could harm children if taken without a doctor's guidance are often sold in child-resistant bottles. These typically require pushing and twisting at the same time to open, which makes them harder for young children to access and helps reduce accidental poisonings. 3. Most cars with automatic transmissions will not let you shift out of Park Mode unless your foot is on the brake pedal. This feature, helps prevent the car from lurching forward if the gear is shifted by accident. 4. Modern cars use a warning sound to alert drivers who start driving without a seatbelt fastened. In many vehicles, the sound becomes faster or more persistent the longer the seatbelt stays unbuckled, encouraging the driver to buckle up. This feature has been linked to a reduction in fatalities. A similar idea applies when a driver turns off the engine but leaves the headlights on. A beeping sound serves as a reminder, helping to prevent a dead battery. ### How to Benefit from the Poka-Yoke Approach The Poka-Yoke approach can help solve everyday problems by mistake-proofing them, removing the need to rely on willpower or memory alone. 1. People who struggle to wake up because they keep hitting snooze can place their alarm out of arm's reach. This forces them to get out of bed to turn it off, solving part of the problem. 2. Setting your email to delay sending by 10 to 15 seconds gives you a short window to catch a mistake, such as a missing attachment or the wrong recipient, before the message actually goes out. Many email programs offer this as a built-in feature. 3. Setting a work laptop to lock automatically after a few minutes protects sensitive information without requiring you to remember to lock it every time you step away. 4. Individuals who struggle to save money or invest can solve this problem by automating the process. A fixed percentage or amount is transferred automatically to a separate account every month. This way, temptation, willpower, and memory are removed from the equation. ### Conclusion People are not perfect. They get distracted, forget things, become tired and occasionally make poor decisions. We should not design systems on the assumption that people will never make mistakes. We should design systems with human error in mind. Get more like this, straight to your inbox. A path dependence feedback loop describes how our past decisions shape our future by creating conditions that reinforce those early choices over time. As a result, we often become locked into a particular path, making alternative options increasingly difficult or costly. ### Path Dependence Feedback Loop in Real Life 1. Deciding what to study, and later taking your first job, can shape decades of your career. As you build experience and skills specific to that field, switching careers becomes increasingly costly. The better you become in this specific area, the more locked in you get. The longer someone stays, the harder it becomes to change course. 2. The United States primarily uses the United States Customary System (USCS), miles, feet, inches, and related units. Nearly every aspect of daily life, from road signs to recipes to construction standards, is built around this system. The longer it remains in use, the harder it becomes to change. Even if the government decided to switch to the metric system, the disruption would be so significant that, at this point, keeping the current system seems the more practical choice. Notably, some U.S. fields, such as medicine and scientific research, already rely primarily on the metric system. ### Conclusion Early decisions often reveal their true impact much later. As time passes, each decision reinforces the previous one, increasing the cost of changing course until switching becomes impractical. Get more like this, straight to your inbox. A new medicine or medical procedure can be presented as having a 20% mortality rate or an 80% survival rate. The way this information is presented to a patient can dramatically change their decision-making process. The risk is the same, only the way the information is framed has changed. Which would you choose, a 20% mortality rate or an 80% survival rate? 2. Companies frequently exploit the framing effect to present their products as more attractive than they actually are. A product containing 20% fat may be marketed as 80% fat free. This shift in focus can influence consumer perception and boost sales, without changing the product itself. Would you buy a product labeled 20% fat or one labeled 80% fat free? 3. Politicians can use this framing to influence voters. A common method is framing results selectively. A political party might report 20% unemployment or 80% employment. Depending on the framing used, voters opinions may shift, even though the underlying numbers describe the same reality. Would you vote based on 20% unemployment or 80% employment? ### Conclusion The framing effect is used across many industries to make things appear better or worse without changing anything about them in substance. It is a tool that shapes decisions in nearly every area of life, from everyday purchases to government policy and healthcare. Get more like this, straight to your inbox. Regression to the mean is the statistical tendency for unusually high or unusually low results to be followed by results that are closer to the average. This happens because extreme outcomes are often partly due to random variation, not because anything special occurred. ### Regression to the Mean in Real Life 1. A city intersection experienced an unusually high accident rate compared to previous years. In response, the mayor decided to install traffic cameras. The following year, the number of accidents decreased. This decrease could be due to the cameras, but it could also be partly explained by regression to the mean. If the original spike in accidents was unusually high because of random variation, accident rates would be expected to move closer to their long-term average even without the cameras. The mayor, however, attributes the entire reduction to the cameras. 2. A coach criticized athletes whose performance fell significantly below expectations while praising those who performed exceptionally well. In the next round, the criticized athletes performed better, while the praised athletes performed worse. Regression to the mean predicts that unusually poor performances are often followed by better ones, and unusually strong performances are often followed by weaker ones, simply because extreme results tend to move closer to average over time. The coach mistakenly concludes that criticism improves performance and praise makes performance worse. 3. A company had an unusually poor quarter, so the owner replaced the manager. Under the new manager, the company's performance improved and moved closer to its usual level. The owner concludes that the new manager is responsible for the improvement. However, the improvement may be partly or entirely explained by regression to the mean. After an unusually poor result, performance often moves closer to its long-term average even if nothing significant has changed. The same principle works in reverse, after an unusually successful quarter, the following quarter is likely to be less exceptional and closer to average. ### Conclusion Regression to the mean reminds us that extreme results are often followed by more typical ones. Failing to consider this statistical phenomenon can lead us to incorrectly attribute changes to specific actions or events, especially when combined with the [False Cause Fallacy](https://nousimon.com/false-cause-fallacy/) Get more like this, straight to your inbox. Many individuals who exhibited violent behavior were found to have played video games, leading many people to believe that video games caused the violent behavior. 2. Autism is often diagnosed around the same age children receive certain routine vaccinations. Because of this timing overlap, many individuals believe that vaccines cause autism. 3. Centenarians share their secrets to a long life, such as drinking one glass of wine a day or eating a certain meal daily. Because of this, some people come to believe that these single habits caused them to live past 100. ### False Cause Fallacy and Other Factors at Play People often overlook other contributing factors, which makes them more susceptible to the false cause fallacy. For example, many have noticed that shark attacks tend to rise whenever ice cream sales increase. This pattern has inspired a number of humorous theories. The data itself is accurate. Ice cream sales and shark attacks do rise together. But while the numbers are correct, the conclusion drawn from them is flawed. Several other factors explain this pattern. Ice cream sales rise in the summer, when more people go swimming, and with more people in the water, the likelihood of shark attacks naturally increases too. ### Conclusion Correlation is not causation. Moral licensing is a psychological pattern in which people, after doing something they see as good, feel they have earned permission to do something bad. ### Moral Licensing in Real Life 1. A person goes to the gym and then feels entitled to eat unhealthy food afterward. 2. A person quits a bad habit and then feels entitled to judge others who still have it. 3. A person recycles regularly and then feels excused for polluting the environment in some unrelated way, believing the recycling cancels out the harm. 4. A CEO donates to charity to appear ethical, using the donation to offset criticism of harmful practices elsewhere in their business. ### Conclusion Individuals license themselves to act less virtuously, based on the moral credit they believe their past actions have earned them. Survivorship bias is the tendency to draw conclusions by focusing only on the people, things, or cases that remained visible or "survived" a selection process, while overlooking those that were lost, failed, or disappeared. As a result, we end up with a distorted picture of reality. ### Survivorship Bias in Real Life 1. The classic example of survivorship bias comes from World War II. The initial idea was to reinforce the areas of returning warplanes that had been hit by enemy fire. However, these planes had made it back despite being hit in those areas. The planes that did not return were presumed to have been hit in different, more critical areas. As a result, the parts that actually needed reinforcement were the areas that showed little or no damage on the returning planes because aircraft hit there were less likely to survive and return. 2. Many people admire the idea of dropping out of college to start a business. They point to famous entrepreneurs who became multimillionaires or billionaires after leaving college, believing that a college degree is less important than it appears. However, this is an example of survivorship bias. We hear about the small number of dropouts who achieved extraordinary success, but not about the much larger number who also left college and did not become successful entrepreneurs. Because those unsuccessful cases receive little attention, focusing only on the famous success stories can give a misleading impression of how likely that outcome really is. 3. People often say that things were better decades ago, that buildings were built better, music was better, movies were better and products lasted longer. In reality, we mainly see the buildings that were well constructed because many poorly built ones have been demolished or replaced. Likewise, we remember the great songs from the past because they continued to be played and appreciated, while the countless mediocre or forgettable songs have largely been forgotten. As a result, we often compare the very best of the past with everything that exists today. This creates the impression that quality has declined, even though every era has produced both exceptional and mediocre work. ### Conclusion Judging only the survivors will often give us a false perception of reality. To truly understand the full picture, we must also take into consideration those who did not make it. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment that explores the nature of identity through a simple scenario. Over time, a ship has each of its damaged parts replaced one by one. By the end of this process, every original component has been substituted with a new one. The question then arises. Is it still the same ship after all its original components have been replaced? The thought experiment deepens with a second layer. If someone were to collect all the discarded original parts and reassemble them into a ship, two ships would now exist. One has remained in continuous use but contains none of its original material, while the other has been rebuilt from the original parts but lacks that continuity. Which one is truly the Ship of Theseus? ### The Ship of Theseus in Real Life 1. Our bodies continuously replace many of their cells throughout our lifetime, and our thoughts, beliefs, and practices shift and evolve over time. A few years from now, we may hold different convictions, carry different memories, and inhabit a body composed of different cells. So the question becomes, are we still the same person? 2. Consider your favourite band or sports team. Over the years, every member you once cheered for may have left, and new faces have taken their place. At what point, if any, does it stop being the same band or team? Now take it a step further. If those original members, the ones who defined the team, left and formed an entirely new team together, would that new team be your favourite? 3. A nation changes significantly over the centuries. Its borders may change, its traditions may evolve, its language may shift and its population will change as generations come and go. A nation may even cease to exist for a time and later re-emerge. It may be colonized by another power, or it may establish colonies that later become independent. If its language has changed, its traditions have evolved, and its people have been replaced over time, is it still the same nation? ### One Layer Deeper Imagine a future in which medicine advances to the point where every failing human organ can be replaced by a mechanical equivalent. You undergo each procedure gradually, one replacement at a time, remaining conscious and continuously aware throughout the process. Eventually, every organ in your body has been replaced by an artificial one. Each step is small, and your sense of identity remains unbroken from beginning to end. This continuity raises a philosophical question. If a person composed entirely of artificial components is still regarded as human because their identity persisted through gradual change, what does it truly mean to be human? And if such a person remained human and sentient despite being built entirely from artificial parts, should we then apply the same logic to robots and artificial intelligence? ### Conclusion Identity may extend beyond the material world. We might just as well be our thoughts and actions, or nothing at all, or perhaps merely an illusion shaped by the [Tinkerbell effect](https://nousimon.com/tinkerbell-effect/). Cultural lag refers to the phenomenon in which social institutions fail to keep pace with rapid technological change, resulting in a widening gap between the two. ### Cultural Lag in Real Life 1. The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is occurring faster than the legal system can adapt. This creates periods of uncertainty during which governments struggle to determine what is legal, who is responsible, and who should be held accountable. 2. Nuclear weapons were developed and used before any comprehensive international legal framework existed to govern them. The atomic bomb was first used many years before the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was opened for signature. 3. For many years, cryptocurrencies operated in a legal grey area. Governments were often uncertain whether they should be classified as currencies, assets, commodities, or securities, creating loopholes and ambiguities in taxation. Consumer protection and fraud regulation were also poorly defined, leaving significant gaps in legal oversight. ### Conclusion When one part of society evolves faster than another part can adapt, a period of uncertainty emerges in which society operates in ambiguity. The Red Queen Effect is the phenomenon in which continuous adaptation and evolution are necessary simply to keep up and avoid falling behind. ### The Story Behind the Red Queen Effect The term "Red Queen" references the novel "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There", which is a sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When the Red Queen said: "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" ### Red Queen Effect in Real Life 1. Hyper-competitive societies compel their citizens to compete fiercely for jobs, pushing standards so high that university degrees and master's qualifications have become the expected baseline rather than a mark of distinction. As master's degrees become increasingly common, possessing one provides a progressively smaller competitive advantage. Yet lacking one places a candidate at a significant disadvantage. 2. Organisations must continually study and adopt new technologies to remain competitive and capture greater market share. However, since most companies follow the same practice, no single organisation gains a lasting advantage. They merely maintain their existing position. By contrast, failing to adopt new technologies and ideas can cause an organisation to fall behind and lose market share. 3. Predators grow faster over generations, enabling them to catch prey more effectively and survive. Prey, in turn, adapt to the increasing speed of their hunters, evolving greater agility and speed to escape. Both species improve measurably over time, yet the competitive balance between them remains unchanged. ### Conclusion When every competitive advantage is adopted by everyone, nobody has a competitive advantage. Only those who fail to adopt it have a disadvantage. Evolutionary mismatch is the concept that a trait which evolved because it provided an advantage in a past environment can become a disadvantage when the environment changes. ### Evolutionary Mismatch in Real Life Thousands of years ago, an efficient metabolism that stored fat and conserved energy was likely a survival advantage. Food was scarce, and the ability to store excess calories may have helped people endure famine and pass these traits to future generations. Today, food is abundant and highly caloric. The same traits that once aided survival may now work against us. Efficient fat storage, combined with the sedentary nature of modern life, contributes to the risk of obesity and related health problems, and can add psychological strain in societies that prize physical appearance. ### Conclusion The very same trait that allows an organism to thrive in one environment can become a significant disadvantage for that same organism in a different one. --- Enjoyed this article? The concept of the permanent underclass describes a social phenomenon in which individuals and families become trapped in cycles of poverty due to systemic socioeconomic conditions, such as limited access to education, employment, and capital. These conditions can persist across multiple generations, keeping people at the lowest levels of society. ### Permanent Underclass in Real Life 1. People who flee war or collapsing states often arrive in foreign countries without speaking the local language and are forced to rebuild their lives from scratch. Starting over in an unfamiliar society without professional networks or recognized qualifications places them at a significant disadvantage that can take generations to overcome. 2. Children born into unstable or dysfunctional families, where care, stability, and basic resources are lacking, may be denied the conditions necessary for healthy development. Without the tools to grow, learn, and build on a stable foundation, many remain trapped in the same cycle of disadvantage experienced by their parents. 3. Individuals born into societies with caste systems may find their opportunities severely limited from birth. The circumstances of their birth can strongly influence their social position, access to opportunities, and future prospects. In societies where birth determines destiny, personal effort alone is rarely enough to overcome a hierarchy that has been centuries in the making. ### Permanent Underclass and Artificial Intelligence Some technology leaders, researchers, and workers in Silicon Valley believe that advances in artificial intelligence could push a significant portion of society into a permanent underclass. Their concern is that as AI automates more jobs, people who do not own assets, businesses, or capital may find it increasingly difficult to generate income and build wealth, concentrating economic power in the hands of a smaller ownership class. ### Conclusion The permanent underclass is the result of systems that were never designed to give everyone an equal start, trapping people in endless cycles of poverty and limited prosperity. The Tinkerbell effect is a term describing things that exist only because people believe in them. ### The Tinkerbell Effect in Real Life 1. Money has value because societies have collectively decided to give it value. By itself, the paper note or the digital entry carries no inherent worth. The value lies in the idea behind it. We agreed to exchange dollars for goods, therefore we do so. 2. Luxury brands thrive because people believe in the idea behind them. The materials and techniques may be the same as those used by cheaper alternatives, yet the perceived value is far higher, because people have collectively given these brands an expensive identity. 3. Borders and laws are constructs that don't necessarily correspond to any physical boundary. Nations have collectively agreed that borders, including maritime borders, exist and so, in practice, they do. ### Why the Tinkerbell Effect Matters Shared belief in institutions such as money, law, and government helps large societies cooperate and function. History shows that when public trust in these institutions collapses, instability tends to follow. ### Conclusion Some things exist only because people believe in them, whether they do so willingly or not. The decoy effect is a decision-making bias in which adding a third, deliberately less appealing option changes how people choose between two existing ones. The new option isn't meant to be chosen, it exists to make one of the original choices look better by comparison. ### The Decoy Effect in Real Life A common example involves popcorn sizes at a cinema. Suppose a small costs $3 and a large costs $9. On its own, many people would hesitate to choose the large option. But once a medium is introduced at $8, the large suddenly looks like a bargain. For just $1 more than the medium, you get significantly more popcorn. The medium option acts as a decoy. Its purpose isn't to sell, it's there to make the large option look like a great deal by comparison. Which option would you choose? Small for $3, Medium for $8 or Large for $9? The same logic shapes coffee-shop menus, subscription tiers, phone plans, and housing options, quietly steering buyers toward the choice a seller most wants them to make. ### Conclusion When an additional, intentionally less appealing option is introduced, it makes the other options appear more attractive without improving the original offer itself. The anecdotal fallacy is an error in reasoning in which a person relies on an isolated event or personal experience to override broader statistical evidence. ### Anecdotal Fallacy in Real Life 1. Person A: Alcohol is bad for your health. Person B: I know a guy who's 90 years old and still drinking, so it can't be that harmful. 2. Person A: A college education is important. Person B: Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of college and is now a billionaire, so college is a waste of time and money. 3. Person A: Wearing a seatbelt keeps you safer in a crash. Person B: My friend survived a car accident and he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. ### Conclusion Isolated anecdotal events do not override statistical evidence. A rare exception does not outweigh the overwhelming majority of cases. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. The Peter Principle is the tendency for people to rise through a hierarchy until they reach a position they can't perform well, and then to stay there. The Peter Principle began as a semi-satirical observation, but over time people started to take it seriously. ### The Peter Principle in Real Life A company has a great car salesman, so good that it promotes him into management, assuming that someone who excels at selling cars will be equally good at managing people. But the two skills aren't necessarily correlated. If he turns out to be a poor manager, the company typically won't reverse the promotion, nor will it promote him any further. So he ends up stuck in a role he isn't suited for. The team suffers a double loss, it has lost its best salesman and gained a poor manager. ### Conclusion Being highly skilled in one area doesn't guarantee those skills carry over to another. People tend to be promoted until they reach a level where they can no longer excel, and there they remain, stuck in a job that doesn't fit them. Enjoyed this? You'll love the newsletter. The Perverse Incentive or Cobra Effect is a situation where the intended solution or incentive ends up making the original problem even worse. ### The Story Behind The Perverse Incentive The authorities of British India wanted to reduce the population of cobras. To achieve this, they offered a financial reward for every cobra head that individuals brought to the authorities. However, this incentive led people to begin breeding cobras so they could later kill them and collect the reward for profit. Instead of reducing the number of snakes, the policy caused the cobra population to increase dramatically. This unintended outcome became known as the Cobra Effect. This anecdote has been challenged many times and may not be historically accurate. ### Perverse Incentive in Real Life 1. A business wants its employees to serve more customers over the phone and therefore sets a daily target of at least 100 phone calls. To reach this goal, employees begin making fake one-second calls simply to increase their call numbers. As a result, the problem becomes even worse because employees spend time manipulating the metric instead of genuinely helping customers, ultimately serving fewer people overall. 2. When a natural disaster destroys property and the government offers financial assistance based on the extent of the damage, some individuals who do not qualify may intentionally damage their own property in order to receive aid and renovate or replace it at reduced personal cost. 3. Some city governments have funded homeless shelters based on the number of beds filled each night. In such systems, shelters may have no financial incentive to move people into permanent housing, since an empty bed can mean a loss of funding. As a result, a system intended to reduce homelessness can unintentionally create financial incentives that help maintain it. ### Conclusion When a policy’s incentive structure rewards the wrong behavior, it can worsen the very problem it was designed to solve. Omission bias is the tendency to judge harmful actions as worse than equally harmful inactions, even when the outcome is the same. ### Omission Bias in Real Life 1. Technically, they did not lie about it. In many situations, individuals deliberately hide information they should share, whether in relationships, business, or everyday life. An easy example is selling a product that you know has a problem but choosing not to mention it. The reasoning is often: “Technically, I did not lie, so it is not my fault” while still withholding important information. 2. Financial Decisions. Many individuals keep their money in savings accounts while fully aware that inflation is steadily eroding its value. They avoid investing because a financial loss caused by an active mistake often feels more painful than money lost through inaction. In other words, losses resulting from a decision they consciously made tend to feel worse than losses caused by a decision they never made at all. 3. Someone Else’s Mistake. A cashier gives you far more change than they should have. You notice the mistake but choose not to mention it and simply keep the money. In your mind, you have not actively stolen the money in the traditional sense at least, because it is the cashier’s mistake. Yet you are benefiting from a mistake you knowingly chose not to mention. ### Conclusion Inaction can also carry weight and responsibility. However, we often feel that a negative outcome resulting from our actions is worse than one resulting from our inaction. Enjoyed this? You'll love the newsletter. The tragedy of the commons describes a phenomenon in which individuals, acting primarily in their own self-interest, overuse finite shared resources, ultimately harming the entire group. ### The Tragedy of the Commons in Real Life 1. Excessive Fishing. When fishermen are incentivized to catch as many fish as possible for profit, the shared resource can begin to disappear, ultimately harming everyone involved, including many who are not directly connected to the industry. Each party understands that if they do not catch the fish, someone else might take a larger share instead. As a result, every side is incentivized to maximize its own catch before the resource becomes depleted. 2. Deforestation. When a forest is treated as a shared resource with open access, individuals and businesses may clear land for profit because the personal benefits are immediate, while the environmental costs are distributed across society. Each individual reasons that if they do not cut the trees, someone else will. The consequences ultimately affect entire communities and future generations, not just those who profited from the destruction. ### Conclusion When individuals act in their own short-term self-interest, without coordination or regulation, the group as a whole ultimately pays the price. The fundamental attribution error is the tendency to view other people’s behavior as a reflection of their character or personality, while overlooking the situational factors that may have influenced their actions. ### Fundamental Attribution Error in Real Life 1. You see a car driving through a red light and automatically assume the driver is reckless. However, if we did the same thing, we might justify it by assuming there was an emergency. 2. Your colleague arrives late to work, and you assume it is because they are lazy or irresponsible. When we are late ourselves, we are more likely to blame traffic or an unexpected event. 3. When someone fails to reply to a message, we often believe that they do not care. In reality, they may simply be overwhelmed, preoccupied with work, or in a situation that makes it impossible to respond at that moment. ### Conclusion In everyday life, we often judge other people’s actions too quickly by assuming their behavior reflects who they are as a person, rather than considering the circumstances they may be facing. ‎ Worth your time? Marginal gains is the idea that breaking a process into small parts and improving each one by just 1% can lead to significant overall improvement over time. ### Marginal Gains in Real Life 1. A restaurant wants to improve customer satisfaction, but it cannot completely reinvent the business overnight. Instead, the owners focus on small improvements. The staff greet customers more warmly, tables are cleaned more quickly, the menu becomes easier to read, ingredients are organized more efficiently in the kitchen, and waiting times are reduced by a few minutes. At the same time, the restaurant improves the lighting, updates the music playlist, and trains employees to handle customer complaints more professionally. Each individual change may seem minor, but together these improvements create a much better dining experience and can significantly increase customer satisfaction over time. 2. A person who wants to improve their life can also benefit from the strategy of marginal gains. Instead of attempting huge lifestyle changes that are often unrealistic and difficult to maintain, the individual can focus on making small improvements in different areas of life. They might start going to sleep a little earlier, reading instead of endlessly scrolling on their phone, exercising a few times per week, improving their diet, reducing alcohol, caffeine, and smoking, and carrying a water bottle to stay hydrated. Each individual improvement may appear small and insignificant on its own. However, when practiced consistently over time, these changes may gradually transform a person’s quality of life. ### Marginal Losses Marginal gains can also work in reverse. If you worsen multiple areas of a system, even by a small amount, the combined effect can lead to significant decline over time. Small negative changes across many areas may accumulate and result in what could be described as marginal losses. ### Conclusion Marginal gains demonstrate how small, consistent improvements across many areas can produce meaningful long-term results. Rather than relying on one major transformation, success is often built through the accumulation of many small changes. ‎ Worth your time? Confirmation bias is the practice of favoring information that confirms our existing beliefs while discarding anything that challenges them. ### Confirmation Bias in Real Life 1. Reading news exclusively from sources that align with our existing beliefs, while ignoring everything else. 2. Deciding you dislike someone and then interpreting everything they do in a negative light, even neutral actions. 3. Believing that a policy you voted for is working properly, and only remembering the success stories while forgetting the cases where it failed. 4. A sports fan who believes their team was treated unfairly notices every bad referee call made against them, while overlooking the ones that went in their favor. 5. Judges who become convinced early on that a suspect is guilty, may unconsciously focus on evidence that supports that conclusion and overlook evidence that points elsewhere. 6. People tend to remember historical events in a way that glorifies their own culture or nation, while minimizing or forgetting uncomfortable truths. 7. Holding a stereotype about a group and noticing every person from that group who fits it, while ignoring the many who do not. 8. Individuals who believe in astrology tend to remember and cite as proof the times when predictions were accurate, while ignoring every instance in which those predictions proved to be wrong. 9. Conspiracy theory believers actively seek out information that supports their theory and dismiss all contradicting evidence. ### Conclusion We tend to accept information that aligns with what we already believe. Being aware of confirmation bias can help us become more fair and accurate in our judgments, both as individuals and as a society. ‎ Worth your time? The Diderot Effect describes the tendency for a single new purchase to trigger a chain reaction of unplanned follow-up purchases, all connected to the original item. ### The Diderot Effect in Real Life 1. You buy a new TV, but suddenly your old sound system feels out of place, it simply doesn't match. So you upgrade that too. You start spending more time watching movies, which leads you to upgrade your streaming subscription. Then you glance at your couch and realize it's no longer worthy of those long movie nights. So that goes next. 2. You buy a beginner camera to just try photography. Then you realize the kit lens isn't cutting it, so you pick up a proper one. A camera bag comes next, you can't carry it around unprotected. Then you need editing software. A tripod follows, then filters to get the lighting right. Your SD cards fill up fast, so you buy a hard drive to back everything up. Now your old laptop is struggling to run the software, so that gets replaced too. You bought a camera. Now you have a studio. ### Diderot Effect: Dangerous Only to the Unaware The Diderot Effect isn't something you need to avoid entirely. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and the right tools can help you get there. Hobbies aren't a luxury, they're essential to a balanced, fulfilling life. Simply being aware of the Diderot Effect can be enough to protect you. Knowing that one purchase can easily lead to many more will make you think twice. That pause alone can save you a great deal of money. But if you're fully aware of it and still choose to follow your passion, nobody can stop you. ### Conclusion One purchase, or even a gift, can spark a chain reaction of seemingly unrelated spending. And that's precisely what makes the Diderot Effect so easy to fall into. It rarely feels like a chain. Each new purchase seems justified on its own. In reality, one purchase is rarely ever just one purchase. ‎ Worth your time? The straw man fallacy is a common error in reasoning in which someone misrepresents an opponent’s argument, making it easier to attack and dismiss, rather than engaging with the original position. ### The Straw Man Fallacy in Real Life 1. Person A: I think we should eat a balanced diet to live a healthier life. Person B: So you are saying we should eat nothing but salads for the rest of our lives? 2. Person A: I believe we should invest in our military capabilities. Person B: So you want to shut down every university and hospital in the country and spend it all on bombs? 3. Person A: I believe the state should play a stronger role in regulating large corporations. Person B: So you are a communist! ### Conclusion The straw man fallacy is the tendency to misrepresent an opposing argument and then attack that distorted version, in order to appear the winner of the debate. This behaviour appears across many arenas of human disagreement, political debates, casual conversations, workplace discussions and even family dinners. It tends to emerge when a person is more invested in winning an argument than in genuinely engaging with what the other side has actually said. ‎ Worth your time? Yak shaving is a metaphor that refers to a chain of seemingly unrelated tasks that must be completed, before you can finally return and complete your original goal. ### Yak Shaving in Real Life You decide to watch a movie. You reach for the TV remote, only to discover the batteries are dead. You set out to replace them, but realize you have none at home. So, you get in the car and head to a nearby store. On the way, you notice the fuel is low, which leads you to make a detour to the gas station. There, you fill the tank and pick up the batteries. Back home, remote in hand, you turn on the TV and sign in to your streaming service, only to find that the movie you want isn’t available. You search other platforms and eventually locate it on a service you’ve never used before. You begin creating an account. A confirmation email is sent to an address you haven’t accessed since 2020\. Locked out, you’re faced with a security question: ''What is your first teacher’s name?'' Nothing comes to mind. You start calling old classmates, hoping one of them remembers a teacher from 2001. All of this, simply because you wanted to watch a movie. ### Conclusion Small tasks can sometimes carry an enormous weight behind them, especially when the necessary foundations are not yet in place. ‎ Worth your time? AI deskilling is the process by which individuals lose existing skills or fail to develop fundamental ones due to their over-reliance on AI tools, ultimately leading to the atrophy of those abilities. ### AI Deskilling in Real Life 1. Writing, whether emails, essays, or articles, has become easier than ever. Today, individuals can produce highly polished text even with limited knowledge of the language or the subject matter. However, because they do not actively engage the cognitive processes involved in writing, they may eventually struggle to compose effectively without AI assistance, or fail to develop this skill altogether. 2. Learning, discipline and attention. Because AI tools can provide answers within seconds, we are gradually developing a lower tolerance for waiting or engaging in prolonged research that demands sustained attention. As a result, many individuals now prefer an immediate, “good enough” answer over a more accurate one that requires hours of careful investigation. 3. Creativity and problem-solving are like muscles that require regular training, without it, they can atrophy. As AI advances, many individuals may experience a decline in these abilities, since it has become very easy to obtain a “good enough” result without deep cognitive effort. ### Is Deskilling a New Phenomenon? Deskilling is not a new phenomenon. It has existed in the past and will continue to emerge in the future. Most of us can no longer hunt a deer, make fire from scratch or build a house. These are skills that have gradually been lost as societies have advanced and lifestyles have changed. In today’s world, it is more important for individuals to know how to drive a car and use a smartphone than to know how to build a carriage. ### Conclusion Due to AI tools, certain skills experience atrophy and may not develop at all. However, this deskilling phenomenon is not new to humans. Throughout history, we have lost many skills while gaining new ones in return. This cycle will continue indefinitely. The key is to use your tools, as tools. ‎ Worth your time? The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, suggests that about 80% of results come from 20% of causes. A small portion of actions, inputs or efforts usually produces the majority of outcomes. It highlights the idea that not everything contributes equally to results and some factors are far more important than others. ### The Pareto Principle In Real Life 1. Business: In many businesses, a small group of high-spending customers generates most of the company’s revenue. That is why successful businesses prioritize keeping these customers satisfied above all others. 2. Productivity: Completing the most important 20% of your tasks, the ones with the greatest impact on your project, will help you make the most of your time. These tasks are far more important than micromanaging the smallest details. 3. When it comes to your health, eating whole foods, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly cover most of what your body needs. In comparison, searching for the perfect detox smoothie has only a minimal impact. ### Conclusion Not everything we do has the same level of impact. Some actions produce most of the results, while others contribute very little. ‎ Worth your time? Status quo bias is our deep-seated preference for keeping things exactly as they are. When faced with a choice between change and staying put, we instinctively favour the current situation, not because it is objectively better, but because any departure from it feels risky, uncomfortable, and potentially regrettable. ### The Status Quo Bias In Real Life 1. A sports fan rarely chooses their team. The decision is made before the person is old enough to evaluate it. Decades later, armed with statistics, league tables, and a full understanding of their team's limitations, they would not dream of switching. This is status quo bias at its most emotional and most durable, a loyalty that began as accident and hardened into identity. 2. Most people do not choose their career the way they choose a house or a car, with research, reflection and a clear sense of what they need. They fall into something young, it becomes familiar, and familiar eventually becomes permanent. Years pass. The job that was supposed to be temporary hardens into a life. Changing begins to feel not like an opportunity but like a demolition and so the alarm goes off every morning, the commute happens, the hours are served, and nothing changes. Not because the job is good. Because change is harder to imagine than continuation. 3. The first car insurance policy most people ever hold was not really chosen by them. A parent rang the insurer they had used for twenty years and added the new driver to the policy. A decision was made for them before they knew enough to make one for themselves. And then, year after year, the renewal letter arrives, the direct debit goes out and nobody asks a single question. The choice that was never quite made keeps quietly renewing itself, sometimes for decades. 4. Countries that automatically register their citizens as organ donors after death, requiring people to actively opt out if they do not wish to donate, consistently report significantly higher organ donation rates than countries where citizens must voluntarily opt in. People tend to stick with whatever the default option is, simply because changing it requires effort and deliberate action. When donation is the default, inertia works in society's favour. ### Conclusion Status quo bias is not laziness, and it is not stupidity. It is a deeply human response to a world full of uncertainty, a way of protecting ourselves from the regret of a bad decision by simply not making one. Staying put is always a decision too, and it carries its own costs. ‎ Worth your time? Boiling the frog is a metaphor for the danger of gradual change. The idea is rooted in the observation that if you place a frog in boiling water, it jumps out immediately, but if you place it in cool water and slowly raise the temperature, it fails to notice the danger and is eventually cooked alive. Whether or not this is literally true of frogs is beside the point. ### Boiling The Frog In Real Life 1. Declining Physical Health. A once-active person skips the gym for a week, then a month, then stops entirely. Portion sizes grow slightly larger. Sleep becomes slightly shorter. Energy levels drop so gradually that fatigue begins to feel like personality rather than symptom. No single morning felt like a turning point, yet one day the mirror tells a story that years of slow drift quietly wrote. 2. Screen Time & The Theft of Presence. It did not begin as an addiction, it began as a useful tool. A map here, a message there and a quick search. But the phone followed us to the dinner table, then to the bedroom and then into our rare quiet moments. The most alarming part is not the time lost. It is the fact that most people only notice it when they attempt to simply sit still for five minutes and discover, with quiet shock, that they no longer can. 3. The Silent Outsourcing of the Human Mind. We are living the boiling process right now. It started with an AI-generated email, then an AI-generated summary, then moved to an AI-generated song, an AI-generated film and it might end up... who knows where. Can you feel the boiling water? Me neither. ### Conclusion The most dangerous threats in life rarely arrive loudly. They do not knock on the door, issue warnings or announce their intentions. They arrive quietly, incrementally and dressed as normal. One small compromise, one minor shift, one barely noticeable degree of heat at a time. ‎ Worth your time? A black swan event is something that almost no one saw coming, causes a huge impact and only seems obvious after it has already happened. ### Black Swan Event in Real Life 1. The COVID-19 Pandemic. The world was largely unprepared when it arrived. Within weeks, economies shut down, supply chains broke and daily life changed for billions of people simultaneously. 2. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It killed over 230,000 people across 14 countries. It was a global trauma that occurred on a scale that modern satellite and warning systems were supposed to have solved. 3. The Rise of the Internet. An example of a Positive Black Swan. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people who know very little about a subject tend to overestimate how skilled or knowledgeable they actually are. It is worth noting that none of us are immune to this trap, the Dunning-Kruger can affect anyone, regardless of intelligence or background. ### Dunning-Kruger in Real Life 1. Sports fans who have never played professionally are often the loudest critics of coaches and players, convinced they could make better decisions. 2. A clear example of the Dunning-Kruger effect appears in political discourse, where people with only a passing familiarity with the subject often hold the strongest opinions, confidently judging laws and policies they have never fully read, while dismissing professionals who have spent decades studying these fields. 3. A phrase that almost always signals the Dunning-Kruger effect in action is "Why don't they just..." followed by a seemingly obvious solution to a deeply complex problem. ### Conclusion People with limited knowledge of a subject tend to overestimate their own abilities precisely because they lack the experience needed to recognize how complex that subject truly is. Illich's Law states that beyond a certain threshold of time spent on a given task, efficiency begins to decline and continued effort ultimately becomes counterproductive. ### Illich's Law in Real Life 1. Studying for an Exam. After several focused hours of revision, your retention starts to drop. You begin re-reading the same paragraphs without absorbing them. A break would serve you better than another hour at the desk. 2. Working Long Hours at the Office. An employee who works twelve hours straight rarely produces twice the output of one who works six focused hours. Beyond a certain point, errors increase, decision-making worsens and the quality of work declines, often undoing progress made earlier in the day. 3. Exercise and Training. Athletes who overtrain without enough rest don't get stronger, they get injured. The body needs recovery time to adapt. Beyond the productive threshold, additional training becomes physically counterproductive. ### Conclusion After a certain point, working longer on a task starts to backfire, concentration drops, quality suffers and pushing on only makes it worse. Regular breaks are not a sign of weakness, they are a practical tool for maintaining consistent performance. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. The Barnum effect, also known as the Forer effect, is a psychological phenomenon in which people rate vague, broadly applicable personality descriptions as highly accurate. This effect helps explain, at least in part, why paranormal beliefs and practices such as astrology or fortune telling enjoy such widespread acceptance. ### Barnum Effect in Real Life The Barnum effect appears in many familiar places, tarot card readings, fortune cookies, astrology and even personality tests. Because most of the personality traits described in these contexts are deliberately vague, they can apply to a wide range of people, which is precisely why you will almost always find yourself agreeing with the outcome. It is important to remember that these personality traits are not and should not be the defining force behind your actions. You are more than a vague description and your choices must never be justified or excused simply because a label was assigned to you. ### Conclusion The descriptions behind these practices are deliberately designed to resonate with the vast majority of people, which is precisely why so many of us relate to them so easily. Regardless of what any label or reading may suggest, we are in control of our own actions and must hold ourselves accountable for them. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. The toupee fallacy is a cognitive bias in which individuals judge an entire category as low quality, poorly made or unreliable, simply because they only notice the failed examples, while the successful ones go undetected. ### Toupee Fallacy in Real Life Many people claim that CGI (computer generated imagery) in movies looks fake and unconvincing. In reality, they only notice the poorly executed effects, the seamless, high-quality CGI goes completely unnoticed, blending invisibly into the film. Similarly, some believe they can spot anyone who has had a hair transplant or plastic surgery. But they only identify the failed procedures, the successful ones are never detected, which ironically, is the greatest compliment those results could receive. The same applies to undercover agents. We tend to think they are easy to spot, yet we only ever notice the ones who blow their cover. The truly skilled ones are never caught, and precisely because of that, we never know they were there at all. ### Conclusion We judge entire categories by noticing only the failed examples, while the successful ones always stay under the radar, undetected. Perhaps we should flip our judgment and measure a category not by its most visible failures, but by how seamlessly and invisibly its best examples pass unnoticed. Enjoyed this article? The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, also known as the frequency illusion, is the experience where something you have just learned about or noticed for the first time suddenly seems to appear everywhere around you. ### Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon in Real Life You decide you want to buy a red car. Suddenly, red cars seem to be everywhere on the road, at every traffic light, in every car park, on every street. They were always there. You just never had a reason to notice them before. ### A Double-Edged Sword When you consciously choose to surround yourself with positive input, setting goals, seeking growth and investing in self-improvement, your mind begins to spot opportunities everywhere it looks. The world seems to open up, not because it has changed, but because you have. On the other hand, when your mind is fed a steady diet of pessimism and negativity, it will find exactly what it is looking for, problems at every turn and reasons why things are bound to go wrong. In both cases, the mechanism is the same. What you feed your awareness shapes what you see. And what you see shapes the life you build. ### Conclusion We do not notice more because the world offers more, we notice more because our minds have been given something to look for. Awareness is the lens through which reality is filtered and once that lens is focused, it is nearly impossible to unfocus. The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon reveals the extraordinary and often underestimated power of attention. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. Sunk Cost Fallacy is the phenomenon in which a person persists with a strategy or course of action, not because it remains effective, but because they have already invested significant time, money and energy in it. Even when abandoning it would clearly yield better outcomes. ### Sunk Cost Fallacy in Real Life The sunk cost fallacy can be found across the full spectrum of decisions we make, from the most trivial, such as sitting through a terrible movie simply because we already paid for the ticket, to the most consequential, such as holding on to relationships or businesses that no longer work because of the time and effort we have already poured into them. ### Conclusion We have a natural urge to cling to our strategies and decisions, driven by the fear that letting go will make everything we have invested the money, the time, the energy, seem wasted. But in reality, that money, time and energy are already gone. The only thing we still have the power to shape is the future. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. Diminishing Marginal Utility is a concept that describes how the satisfaction or utility you get from consuming something decreases as you consume more of it. ### Diminishing Marginal Utility: Real-Life Examples One of the simplest illustrations of diminishing marginal utility is the experience of hearing a favourite song for the first time versus the hundredth. That initial listen carries a sense of discovery and wonder that no subsequent play can fully replicate. The same principle applies to food, the first slice of pizza is deeply satisfying, while the last feels like little more than obligation. Or consider childhood Christmases, the magic of the first feels incomparable to the twenty-fifth. We often say that things were simply better when we were young. Sometimes that is true. But more often, what we are really remembering is the novelty of the first encounter. Over time, repeated consumption gradually erodes the satisfaction that an experience once delivered. ### How Companies Leverage Diminishing Marginal Utility Businesses are well aware of this phenomenon and design their pricing strategies accordingly. A pizzeria, for instance, might charge $20 for the first pizza and $10 for the second. This is not random, it reflects the consumer's reality. The second pizza, being identical to the first, simply does not deliver the same level of satisfaction. A lower price aligns with that lower satisfaction, making the offer feel fair and encouraging the customer to buy more than they otherwise would. ### Conclusion The more we consume of something, the less satisfaction each additional unit provides. This is diminishing marginal utility and it shapes both our personal experiences and the commercial world around us. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter. Affective forecasting refers to the process of predicting one's emotional responses to a future event. How good or bad it will make us feel and for how long. We are surprisingly bad at this. ### Affective Forecasting in Real Life We tell ourselves that once we get that job, that car or that house we will finally be happy. But of course, that's not how it plays out. We adapt, the novelty fades and what once felt like everything quietly becomes just another part of the background. We also tend to forget that almost everything else in our lives stays exactly the same. You bought the dream car but you're still driving the same roads to the same job. And maybe that's the thing that actually needs to change. ### Affective Forecasting in Reverse The same logic works the other way around. We convince ourselves that losing something like a job, a partner or a plan will shatter us. But it rarely does. We adapt. We rebuild. Life stubbornly goes on. ### Conclusion We consistently overestimate how happy a good outcome will make us and how devastated we'll be by a bad one. Enjoyed this article? You'll love the newsletter.
